Shirley Braithwaite, 51, of Barnsley, South Yorkshire and her daughter Natalie, 22, died at the scene of the accident in Gairloch, Wester Ross. The woman's son Matthew, 19, was rushed by air ambulance to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness, but died a short time later. The Scottish Ambulance Service said the driver was uninjured in the accident, which happened at about 1735 BST on Friday.
A 28-year-old man is due to appear at Dingwall Sheriff Court on Monday in connection with the deaths. The accident occurred as many people were returning home from work and the village was busy with holidaymakers. Mrs Braithwaite's husband, Kenneth, 53, was crossing the road with his family when the accident happened. He was uninjured but was taken by police to Raigmore Hospital, suffering from severe shock. A Northern Constabulary police spokesman said: "The family was cut away from underneath him. It's very hard and he's totally traumatised." Flowers were left at the side of the road on Saturday as a mark of respect. 'Very shocked' The three were hit while standing across the road from The Wildcat Store, a general shop on the main road in the village. Shop assistant Penny McGillivray, 27, said the community was still trying to come to terms with the deaths. "I think it has left a lot of people very shocked, everyone is talking about it," she said. "It was a fine day and at the time a lot of people would have been returning home from work. "The village is very busy at this time of year with holidaymakers, it is absolutely tragic for something like this to happen in Gairloch." |
