The father of Sarfraz Najeib says he is "shattered" by the verdicts in the Leeds footballers' assault trial.

"Justice has clearly not been done," Muhammad Najeib told a news conference after the hearing.

"My son Sarfraz suffered a savage and racist attack by five white men.

"The last 18 months have been a living hell for our family. Our lives have been shattered.

"This is not the end of the matter. I intend to fight on for justice for my sons."

Sarfraz Najeib was beaten unconscious in an attack outside a Leeds nightclub in January 2000, having been bitten on the face and suffered a broken leg, nose and cheekbone.

Of four people accused of a role in the attack, Leeds players Jonathan Woodgate and Lee Bowyer and their friend Neale Caveney were cleared of grievous bodily harm.

Paul Clifford was jailed for six years for grievous bodily harm and affray, and Woodgate and Caveney were found guilty of affray.

Family spokesman Suresh Grover said the result was a "tremendous disappointment".

'Race-hate campaign'

He said Sarfraz was "disappointed and shattered" and thinking of giving up his studies.

The prominence of the defendants had led to a race-hate campaign against the family, he said.

"Car tyres were slashed and several threats have been made against Mr Najeib.

While the trial judge said there was no racist motive to the attack on the student, the family and Mr Grover take a different view.

Mr Grover said: "The attack on Sarfraz was motivated by racism. Although this may not have been the only motive, we believe it was very significant."

The family was "furious" at Leeds United football club for its lack of courtesy towards Mr Najeib, and for apparently championing its players over the family, he added.

"Since the attack the management of the club has openly paraded... an uncaring, unsympathetic and arrogant attitude to the Najeib family," he said.

The family said they were considering their next legal move, but had made no decision as yet.
