![]() | Monday, 17 December, 2001, 10:00 GMT O'Leary defends book ![]() O'Leary has refused to talk openly about the verdicts Leeds United manager David O'Leary has defended the timing of the serialisation of his book 'Leeds on Trial'. O'Leary comments on the trial of Leeds players Lee Bowyer and Jonathan Woodgate in the book.
The verdict was reached on Friday - Bowyer was cleared of all charges and Woodgate was convicted of affray - and extracts from O'Leary's book appeared in a newspaper on Sunday. As a result, the Leeds manager has been accused of cashing in on the trial in some quarters. But he said: "There's only one chapter in it on that, and anyway, I cannot help the serialisation rights of a newspaper that wants to take it. "I'm not trying to say go out and buy it, but I do stand by everything that is in it." 'Not cashing in' O'Leary said he was not profiting from the episode, pointing out he would not "get any pennies or monies from what the News of the World have printed". O'Leary was critical of Woodgate and Bowyer in the book. "Those two players let Leeds United down and the way they carried on in the streets of Leeds is disgraceful," he The Irishman has also been scathing about the Football Association's decision to ban the two players from England squads during the trial. He said: "It was an act of political correctness - a good PR exercise." O'Leary added that because Bowyer and Woodgate were not first-choice internationals they were "expendable". However, O'Leary will not face a disrepute charge for his remarks. |
