Campaigner "I am a mother of two daughters. I am a lone parent and a youth worker. In the mid nineties I became involved in the campaign against the M77, a motorway through Glasgow. Previous to that I had never so much as complained about anything and I was really very shy, but I felt moved and angered at the idea of this road being driven through the community I grew up in and where many of my family still lived. It was whilst working on this protest that I discovered the route of the M74 Northern Extension. It turned out that this monster would be driven through the community I now live in and again I knew nothing about it. I have learned as much as is humanly possible about this road in order to oppose it. We lobby, have public meetings and take direct action. I have been arrested in my pursuit to get this issue onto the headlines and can't in all honesty stop. During all this I have become very political and about six years ago became a founding member of the Scottish Socialist Party. I will be standing in the forthcoming elections for the Scottish Parliament. We already have an MSP in the parliament, Tommy Sheridan, I am second on the Glasgow list and there is a scary chance that I will get in. I will carry the M74 issue through the campaign and indeed into the parliament if I reach it." This web page is part of a BBC News Online effort to explore new ways of covering grassroots civic activity in the UK. We asked our users to tell us of their activities and chose a handful of these campaigns to follow over the next few months. If you want to know more about this experiment, please Any message for the campaigners? Send them using the form below. We will pass them on.
