| Tuesday, 14 January, 2003, 12:09 GMT Joint Action Against M74 (JAM74) ![]() This web page is part of a BBC News Online effort to explore new ways of covering grassroots civic activity in the UK. We asked our users to tell us of their activities and chose a handful of these campaigns to follow over the next few months. If you want to know more about this experiment, please JAM74 oppose the extension of the M74 motorway in Glasgow. This is what they say about their campaign: "The M74 Northern Extension, at 250 million the most expensive transport project in Scotland, would be raised on 40 feet concrete stilts for parts of its journey from Carmyle in the east to Kingston in the city centre. "JAM74 is calling for a halt to the road plans and for a comprehensive study of all transport options for the area. There has yet to be any independent research on alternative transport options or the effects of the motorway on communities and the environment. "JAM74, a coalition of community, environmental and sustainable transport groups, believes this 1960s-style road planning will cause pollution, health problems, community breakdown and won't free up traffic or bring the jobs that are promised. "Labour was elected to power in Scotland on a platform of cutting car traffic and its transport policy requires Councils to "demonstrate that they have looked at alternative or complementary solutions" before embarking on road building schemes. "This motorway scheme ignores that policy, because the alternatives to move people and freight by other means have never been investigated. Scotland is one of the few places in Europe still building urban motorways. ![]() "Wide roads encourage people to drive further and make extra journeys. And motorways fill up fast. The M77, built in 1996, already has commuter traffic jams. "Instead of wasting money on the M74NE, serious investment is needed in rail lines, new stations and rail freight."
