What people are saying
This web page is part of a BBC News Online effort to explore new ways of covering grassroots civic activity in the UK. We asked our users to tell us of their activities and chose a handful of these campaigns to follow over the next few months. If you want to know more about this experiment, please

This is what News Online users are saying about the Stop Stansted Expansion campaign:

Most of us moan about things that we do not like and I'm certainly one of them. I very much admire people who stand up and be counted. I for one have been moved into action about these insane and illogical plans (not just at Stansted but throughout the UK) and am now willing to actually get involved.
Andy, UK

Everything that allows ordinary people to express their views and concerns in the face of big government, quangos and big corporations -all within the pro airport expansion lobby- is a good thing. Great work and good luck
Bryan Jenkinson, UK

Successive UK Governments have allowed the airport and airline lobbying to succeed against local protest - local individual people with real lives, hopes and plans. Campaigns are based on those emotions and strong co-ordination - this campaign is a shining example. This campaign started on a small scale and I have watched its growth and supported it- at a time when there is little democracy in our country, when surveys and responses are manipulated, they have done an excellent job of capturing the imagination.
Jeffrey Manton, Britain

The government seem to ignore their own advisors when it comes to aviation policy. To develop more runways inland would be travesty of the highest proportions and indicate that the government prioritise commercial pressure from the aviation industry over quality of life for the public. The aviation industry does not need the substantial subsidies they already get.
Graham Young, UK

It is totally unfair to blight any inland area with a Hub Airport. The noise, pollution & damage to the countryside from increased traffic are something the people of England should not have to endure.
Ray Bedborough, England

The reason Stansted Airport is a pleasant airport to fly from is that it is relatively small and rural. Expanding it will not only be disastrous environmentally, it will make it as awful as the Heathrow experience.
Sarah Davies, UK

I strongly oppose the expansion of Stansted. The Government has based its airport expansion figures on a false premise. The only area where air travel is expanding is the cheap flight market. The market will collapse altogether if a tax is placed on plane fuel (as it should be) or if the economy slumps.
Mrs Pat Bruce, England

I absolutely support your campaign, and have written to my local MP to voice my opposition. If we aren't prepared to accept unrestrained growth in car traffic, why should we accept unrestrained, and largely untaxed, air traffic? Carry on the good work.
Kim, UK

Any messages for the campaigners? Write to them using the form below. We will pass them on.
