| Friday, 5 July, 2002, 22:41 GMT 23:41 UK Surprise Brother exit for Adele Adele was loudly booed as she was evicted Adele Roberts has been evicted from Channel 4's Big Brother house after receiving more votes than the bookies' favourite for the boot, Jade Goody. Out of more than three million votes received, Adele got a very high 2,127,733 votes for eviction and was booed by the crowd on her exit from the house. Kate Lawler and Jonny Regan were also nominated but were never considered likely to be voted out by the public.
But betting on personal assistant Adele, 23, from Southport, was halted following a flurry of bets on her to leave. The emphatic vote for her eviction is likely to spark speculation on some form of scam. Hearing the news, a passive Adele said: "I knew it was going to be me. I don't know how." Negative reaction There was booing and hissing from the waiting crowd as Adele left the camera-filled house at 2210 BST. "If people want to boo that's fine. They are only being honest. I can hear them now and that's fine," she said afterwards. And she maintained the negative reaction was probably because of her own "honesty" while she was in the house.
Jade, from Bermondsey, south London, has been particularly unpopular outside the house. Crowds have gathered outside the studios on eviction nights waving banners bearing slogans such as "kill the pig" and shouting for her to leave. Her mother has expressed fears over the treatment her daughter will receive from the public if she is evicted. When she was nominated on Tuesday, official bookmakers Ladbrokes had odds of 1-3 on Jade with Adele at 3-1. But the odds quickly narrowed during the week, as it was suggested viewers might want to see more of Jades gaffes, and a suspiciously high level of betting went to Adele. 'Fourth time' Bookmakers Coral said Adele's eviction could cost them 100,000. Spokesman David Stevens said: "For the fourth time this series, all the money came for one contestant and Adele was backed into 8-13, and now we are left counting the cost." The bookmakers put Alex and Jonny as the 7-4 joint favourites to win, with Kate next at 9-4, PJ at 7-1, Jade at 33-1 and Tim 40-1. Jade had been nominated for eviction by every housemate as they complained about her "two-faced" attitude. But Adele's habit of talking about her fellow housemates has also been documented on camera. |
