| Thursday, 31 October, 2002, 11:34 GMT Australia warns of terror attacks ![]() Investigators in Bali are preparing to release evidence Australia's intelligence chief has said he is "certain" the country will come under terrorist attack, as investigators of the devastating bombing in Bali earlier this month prepared to release forensic evidence.
"We can be confident that the hand of al-Qaeda is somewhere in (the Bali) atrocity," Mr Richardson told a national security conference on Thursday. He warned Australians to expect more attacks, at home or abroad. The warning came after his agency and Australian federal police raided the homes of suspected terrorist sympathisers in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth - many of them Muslims from Indonesia. Australia's attorney-general dismissed criticism on Thursday that the raids were heavy-handed.
The Australian authorities have already said they believe the South-East Asian Muslim militant group Jemaah Islamiah, which is suspected to have links with al-Qaeda, was involved in the Bali attack. In Indonesia, international investigators plan to release results of their forensic examination of the Bali bombing site on Friday. The investigation made its first apparent breakthrough on Wednesday with the release of sketches of three suspects. Police said the three men could be part of a group of up to 10 people involved in the attack.
Indonesian police are meanwhile waiting to question the alleged leader of JI, Abu Bakar Ba'asyir, who is in hospital in Jakarta. While not a suspect in the Bali bombings, he is accused of involvement in a series of attacks in South-East Asia over the last two years. On Thursday, Mr Ba'asyir's lawyer, Ahmad Taufik, said his client "will keep silent". "The police said that they have enough evidence, so we're asking them to prove their case," he said. |
