| Wednesday, 30 October, 2002, 10:50 GMT Bali bomb suspects' sketches released ![]() Witnesses said they saw the three at the bomb scene Indonesian police have released sketches of three men they suspect of involvement in the devastating bombing on the island of Bali.
"We interviewed foreign and Indonesian witnesses who saw these three people at the scene," just before the bombing, said senior police official Prasetyo It is the first time that the Indonesian authorities have released details of suspects in the Bali bombing, which killed almost 200 people earlier this month. There is now a nationwide hunt under way for the men, and the sketches will be posted worldwide by Interpol.
However, the head of the investigation, Major General Made Mangku Pastika, acknowledged that it was possible the men died in the blast. One of the suspects has a dark brown tanned complexion, one is of a lighter complexion and sported shoulder length hair, and the third, who is said to come from East Java, has pouting lips and heavy eyelids. Two of the men are believed to be about 170 centimetres (68 inches) tall and weigh about 50 kilograms (100 pounds) and the third man - the one from East Java - is shorter and of a heavier build. Police said one of the men looks very similar to a wanted criminal on their files.
"They could be executors (of the bombing) or the ones who control the executors." Police said the three suspects could be part of a group of up to 10 men involved in the attack. On Tuesday, Indonesian police removed from hospital an elderly cleric, Abu Bakar Ba'asyir, to question him about a series of attacks in South-East Asia over the last two years. The cleric is also the alleged leader of the militant Muslim group Jemaah Islamiah which authorities suspect of involvement in the Bali bombing. Australia and the United States are helping Indonesia in the investigation into the blast. |
