An architect's impression of the development in Welshpool from 2006 |
Supermarket chain Tesco has unveiled further plans to expand in Powys with a new store in Welshpool. The development is part of a multimillion-pound retail project to re-develop a livestock market, which is expected to create a total of 250 jobs. Building work has started on a new market on the outskirts of town in an area known as Buttington Cross. Tesco has announced plans to open other stores in Powys at Newtown, Machynlleth and Llandrindod Wells. Details about the development in Welshpool were unveiled in 2006 and four of the UK's leading supermarket groups were originally in talks with developers. The initial plans included room for other smaller retail units and a restaurant. Residents were given the chance to view the proposals in May 2006. 'Greater choice' Tesco said it would create 163 jobs in Welshpool. Company spokesman Felix Gummer added: "We are excited by the development of this strategic site, which has such strong pedestrian links with the town centre. "Our store will give a significant boost to the town by providing people with greater choice. "We know we will encourage people back to Welshpool rather than going elsewhere for their shopping. This will assist in securing the future well being of the town centre." Mr Gummer explained the development would enable the livestock market to be built at Buttington Cross. Montgomeryshire AM Mick Bates welcomed the move. "This will secure the town's reputation as a thriving market destination and also to ensure jobs for the community in the long term," he said. "I will be seeking a meeting with Tesco to ensure that local jobs are pursued and partnerships built."
