The plans for the Tesco store go before planners in March
Supermarket chain Tesco is planning to open a new store and create more than 200 jobs in a town where many residents shop weekly over the border in England.

Proposals for Llandrindod Wells, Powys, have included a new petrol station and 500,000 towards a new link road.

Tesco already has permission for a smaller store in the town, but has re-submitted plans for a larger version following a public consultation.

Llandrindod Wells Town Council supports the project.

Tesco has also pledged to build a new scout hut and youth centre and has agreed to fund some improvements to the town.

Powys Council said plans for the store had been re-submitted and they would go before planners in March.

'First mooted'

A spokesman for Tesco said the planned supermarket was close to the main high street and would enable people, who travel to England to do their weekly shop at the moment, to spend money in their own town.

Following a public consultation process, he added that local people felt they were being over charged for fuel and wanted a petrol station.

The town's deputy mayor Ken Richards said: "The town council supports the re-submitted plans and the majority of the town has been supportive since the plans for the supermarket were first mooted.

"The only objection at first was that a petrol station wasn't included in the proposals.

"At the moment people travel to Leominster (34 miles away), Hereford (40 miles), Newtown (28 miles) or Brecon (35 miles) to do their weekly shop."

Meanwhile, work is underway on a new 1m link road in Llandrindod Wells which is designed to improve access to the town's industrial areas and ease traffic problems.

Work on the Ddole link road is expected to take about 20 weeks to complete.

It is jointly funded by Tesco and Powys Council
