The new market will be less than a mile away from the current site

The new home of the biggest one-day market in Wales at Welshpool will be at Buttington Cross, a mile out of town.

The development will include more than 1,000 stock pens, two auction rings, a cafe, weigh bridges, 325 trailer bays and a stockman's home.

The existing market site in the town is earmarked for redevelopment by a supermarket chain.

Hundreds of farmers are attracted to the town's main weekly sale on Mondays, but applicants Welshpool Livestock Sales argued that its current site was poorly positioned and affected traffic flow.

The company added that it needed "extensive work" and investment to comply with European Union legislation.

Supermarket chain

The multi-million pound application was considered by Powys Council's Montgomeryshire planning committee in Welshpool on Friday.

The committee will consider plans for the redevelopment of the old market in the centre of town over the coming months.

As well as a supermarket, proposals for the site include room for other smaller retail units and a restaurant.

Meanwhile, the council confirmed in May that supermarket chain Tesco had bought Newtown livestock market site 15 miles away.
