A supermarket and other shops are planned for the site |
Plans for a multi-million pound redevelopment of one of the largest sheep livestock markets in Europe are to go on public display. The details will go on show at Welshpool town hall on Monday and Tuesday.
Four of the UK's leading supermarket chains are understood to be in talks to build a store in the town, with plans already submitted to Powys Council.
They also include room for other smaller retail units and a restaurant.
Residents and business people in the town are being given a chance to air their views about the 70,000 sq ft shopping space and supermarket.
There are also plans to relocate the livestock market less than a mile away from its current town centre site on the outskirts of town at Buttington Cross.
The new development would cover 70,000 sq ft |
It is the largest one-day market of its type in Wales and attracts hundreds of farmers to its main weekly sale on Mondays.
Planning consultant White Young Green has submitted plans for the current market site, said Powys Council.
Last month, Montgomeryshire AM Mick Bates welcomed the potential development and said the town had lost out to retailers in larger English towns nearby, such as Shrewsbury and Oswestry, for too long.
Meanwhile, Powys Council confirmed last month that supermarket chain Tesco had bought nearby Newtown livestock market.
