Pop Idol winner Will Young is to play T in the Park in a move festival organisers believe signals a new direction for the singer.

Indie, rock, guitar and dance acts are the usual fare for the music event at Balado, near Kinross, which this year runs from 11 to 13 July.

Other bands which have recently been added to the bill include Echo and the Bunnymen and the Goo Goo Dolls.

The festival headliners are the Verve, Rage Against the Machine and REM.

'New material'

Will Young will play an acoustic set on the Saturday.

Festival organiser Geoff Ellis said: "Will Young's T debut this year will surprise those who think of him solely as a classic pop artist.

"His career is headed in a cool new direction as his live acoustic sets pay testament to.

"Saturday's Pet Sound Stage line-up will be all the more eclectic for his appearance.

"We can't wait to see him unveil his new material at Balado this summer."
