Forestry workers had been out since first light and a helicopter was once again brought in to assist by dumping water on the flames.

The blaze, one of the biggest ever seen in the south of Scotland, covered up to 5,000 hectares of land.

Keith Muir, of Forestry Commission Scotland, said it would be some time before the damage could be assessed.

Started accidentally

The blaze is understood to have been started accidentally on Sunday by two people camping in the area.

It quickly spread to cover an area of up to 60 square miles from Loch Doon on the Ayrshire border to Loch Dee in Galloway.

The fire split onto two fronts which were being monitored by the forestry commission team.

Some light rain and assistance from the fire brigade helped to put out the blaze.
