Clear-up operations have started following a major land fire stretching over three miles between Newton Stewart and New Galloway.

Firefighters with assistance from a helicopter fought the blaze near the A712 for more than eight hours.

More than 200 hectares were affected on land close to a deer enclosure in the Galloway Forest Park.

Staff are carrying out an assessment of damage to both land and wildlife in the area hit by the blaze.

Tourism and recreation manager Keith Muir said a close examination of the impact would take place.

"Obviously we will walk the ground and see just what damage has happened," he said.

Mr Muir said they would be checking to ensure that fencing round the deer enclosure had not been broken.

"We will also check for wildlife damage," he added.

"Obviously in a situation like this some wildlife cannot get out of the way of the fire - especially since it was travelling extremely fast."
