The education minister is to see how primary school pupils are getting to grips with reading and writing with help from Gretna Football Club coaches.

The project at Lochmaben School is part of Peter Peacock's itinerary during a visit to Dumfries and Galloway.

He also intends to visit Castle Douglas High School, which receives additional support under the Scottish Executive's Schools of Ambition programme.

The minister will then meet engineer award winners and probationer teachers.

Mr Peacock said Schools of Ambition were at the forefront of education reforms.

"But of course schools are only as good as the teachers who work in them," he added.

"That's why we're investing heavily to attract Scotland's best and brightest into the profession and the probationers at Castle Douglas High are among those helping to inspire, motivate and inform a new generation of ambitious, confident Scots."
