RAF personnel use parade freedoms

RAF squadrons from Lossiemouth have been serving in Afghanistan

About 100 servicemen and women from RAF Lossiemouth have marched through the streets of Elgin with fixed bayonets.

RAF Lossiemouth, like any other military unit, has the right to march anywhere in the country - a right given to them by parliament.

But, by holding the Freedom of Moray, servicemen can parade to a beating drum, with colours flying - and bayonets fixed to their weapons.

The base celebrates its 70th anniversary this year.

It was given the Freedom of Moray, the council's highest award, in 1992 - because of its long association with the area.

The parade started in South Street and headed towards St Giles Church in the High Street.

A Tornado jet from Lossiemouth and a Sea King helicopter from the base's search and rescue unit flew overhead as the servicemen and women passed beneath.
