RAF base in line for new fighter

Joint Strike Fighter
The fighter is capable of vertical take-off

The UK's next generation of military jet could be based at RAF Lossiemouth, defence sources have told the BBC.

On Wednesday, Defence Secretary John Hutton announced plans to purchase three of the US developed Joint Strike Fighter test aircraft.

He said the deal was a "significant milestone" in the UK's commitment for developing the aircraft - a project involving input from several countries.

Lossiemouth in Moray is the largest and busiest fast jet base in the RAF.

Tornado fighter bomber crews are stationed there and regularly train over the Tain firing range in the Highlands.

In 2006, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) sought to give reassurance over its commitment to bringing the new stealth fighter to Lossiemouth.

At the time, ministers warned the deal to buy the Joint Strike Fighter could fall through, sparking fears over the future of the Scottish station.

The aircraft will replace Harriers.

The MoD said its advantages over the Harrier included supersonic flight, stealth, improved survivability and range, and being able to carry munitions inboard and externally.

Vertical lift will be provided by a Rolls-Royce developed fan system.
