New Aberdeen stadium plans backed

Loirston Loch in Nigg is the preferred new site

Plans for a new home for Aberdeen Football Club have been supported by city councillors.

They gave their overwhelming backing to the project at Loirston Loch on the south of the city.

However, the 30,000-seat stadium - which could cost up to £40m - still has to clear the planning process.

An alternative site of Kings Links was earlier deemed too small and expensive. The club has played at Pittodrie for more than a century.

'Green spaces'

Aberdeen managing director Duncan Fraser told the club's official website: "Now we know Loirston is the site we need to focus on the planning process and to ensure we deliver a stadium that will be a fantastic venue for our fans and a real asset to the local community and city and shire."

Aberdeen City Council leader Kate Dean told BBC Scotland: "It's now very much over to Aberdeen FC; we need to wait for the planning process.

"I am sure that environmental issues will be a big thing."

She said of the two options considered: "They are both green spaces."
