Flybe is one of Europe's largest low cost airlines
Flights between Aberdeen and Gatwick are to be taken over by Flybe, it has been revealed.

One of Europe's largest low cost airlines, Flybe will offer three return flights every week day, and one a day at weekends.

It follows the decision of British Airways to drop the route from its schedules from the end of March.

Business leaders were concerned at the loss of the direct link to Gatwick, and the destinations it serves.

Flybe's chief commercial officer, Mike Rutter, said: "The London Gatwick to Aberdeen service is of great strategic importance to Aberdeen and we're delighted to be able to fill the gap and take over this abandoned route from BA."

Malcolm Webb, chief executive of Oil and Gas UK, said: "Regular and dependable flights between London and the oil capital of Europe are very important to the UK oil and gas industry."
