Wet, warm August sets new records

The south of Scotland had a very wet August

Parts of Scotland had their wettest August since records began, according to new figures from the Met Office.

The weather station at Eskdalemuir in Dumfries and Galloway recorded 393.2mm of rain, making it the wettest month since records began a century ago.

Over the three summer months of June, July and August, Dumfriesshire had 177% of the average rainfall.

Temperatures across Scotland as a whole have been 0.9C above normal, the 12th warmest summer since 1914.

Edinburgh and Kirkwall in Orkney hit record highs for July.

Orkney was less wet than normal and was warmer.

Eskdalemuir had its wettest "rainfall day" on August 20 when 78mm (3.07ins) fell in 24 hours.
