Flood waters spill onto streets

Flood waters spilled onto the Whitesands at lunchtime following heavy rains in Dumfries and Galloway overnight

Police have warned of flooding problems across south west Scotland after heavy overnight downpours.

The Whitesands area in Dumfries flooded at about 1200 GMT and drivers were advised to move their vehicles from nearby car parks.

A number of roads in Dumfries and Galloway had already been affected by surface water.

A police spokesman said the A75 between Dumfries and Annan and the A76 north of Sanquhar were the worst hit areas.

A renewed appeal to drivers to remove their cars from car parks next to the River Nith in Dumfries was made mid-morning on Thursday.

It followed warnings from the Scottish Environment Protection Agency that both carriageways of the road on the Whitesands were likely to be flooded.

Water levels were expected to peak at about 1300 GMT.
