Clean-up begins after heavy rain

The clean-up operation has begun in Newmilns

Work is now under way to clean up after torrential rain caused flooding in several areas of the west of Scotland.

Emergency services worked overnight to pump water from a number of properties in Giffnock, East Renfrewshire, including one home with 12ft of water.

Residents in Newmilns, East Ayrshire were mopping up after water flooded the area when a burn burst its banks.

Elsewhere, a historic building in Fife was flooded and there were minor landslips in Dumfries and Galloway.

Strathclyde Fire and Rescue said recent reports indicated the floodwaters were beginning to recede in the area.

But the disruption continued in Newmilns with three primary schools closing early due to flooding.

Neil Lindsay, of Kilnholm Street, said the area was hit by floods at the same time last year.

He said: "This is the second time the street has been flooded. This time I managed to save my house. Last year I was flooded out."

In South Lanarkshire, the local authority said it has been forced to cancel Sunday's Chatelherault Classic Automobile Rally due to the bad weather.

In Fife, firefighters were attending to reports of flooding at Melville House, a historic 17th century building near the village of Letham.

A Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary spokesman said many roads in the Sanquhar and Upper Nithsdale area were affected by flooding and asked drivers to avoid the Sanquhar to Wanlockhead road and affected areas.
