Concern has been growing about attacks on firefighters |
Police intervened to stop a gang of youths who attacked firefighters as they tried to put out a minor blaze. The crew had been called to extinguish burning rubbish in Motherwell on Saturday night but on arrival youths threw bricks and bottles at them.
The officer in charge withdrew the crew and police brought the situation under control. No-one was injured and the fire engine was not damaged.
A senior fire officer described the incident as "extremely disappointing".
The firefighters were attacked as they entered Montalto Avenue at about 2110 BST on Saturday.
Divisional Officer George McGrandles, of Strathclyde Fire and Rescue, said: "It is extremely disappointing when crews are attacked for no apparent reason when they are attempting to protect the public from fire.
"Strathclyde Fire and Rescue are aware of the positive influence firefighters can have in their local communities and are developing a range of strategies to fully engage young people in their local areas.
"Fortunately on this occasion, due to a quick decision by the officer in charge to withdraw and the timely intervention of Strathclyde Police, none of the crew were injured and the appliance sustained no damage."
Concern has been growing about frequent attacks on firefighters.
In July, senior fire officers condemned a gang who attacked firefighters as they attended a grass fire in Glasgow.
They stole equipment and left one firefighter with a minor injury following the attack in Castlemilk.
