Fire engines have become a target for youths |
Attacks on fire crews in the run up to bonfire night could lead to lives being lost, it has been warned. Strathclyde Fire Brigade has revealed that almost 30 attacks occurred during the last two weeks, with some leading to criminal proceedings.
The figure brings the number of attacks on the brigade this year to 120.
The incidents have involved youths throwing stones, bricks, fireworks and bottles at crews, as well as verbal and physical assault.
Assistant Firemaster Rab Coke warned that the attacks could lead to a damaged appliance not being available for fire calls.
He said: "That means if there is a house fire, the brigade will take longer to get there. "It could be your home that's on fire. Your parents, your grandparents, quite simply, someone could die."
On two consecutive nights a fire crew in Milngavie who had been called to attend a bonfire in an open field allegedly came under attack from youths throwing bricks and bottles.
Five youths were subsequently charged with assault.
A number of attacks have also involved fireworks and weapons like knives, air guns and scaffolding poles.
Mr Coke added: "Ultimately, the people responsible for attacking fire crews will face prosecution.
Appeal for help
"If your child, or someone you know, is responsible for attacking fire crews, we are asking you to help us prevent attacks."
He said the brigade was simply asking to be allowed to carry out its job.
But he warned it would increasingly be forced to take action to protect itself.
"We are asking for our communities to protect fire crews," he said.
