A series of events to mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee have taking place in Scotland.

A mixture of formal and informal celebrations have been organised for the Queen's 50 years on the throne, with Edinburgh playing host to some of the biggest events.

The Army paid tribute to the Queen with a 21-Gun Salute from Edinburgh Castle at 1301 BST.

Staff Sergeant Thomas McKay, known as Tam the Gun, fired the one o'clock gun as normal and this was followed by a salute from the Territorial Army's 105 Regiment Royal Artillery.

A Golden Jubilee party was taking place in the city's Princes Street Gardens, with hundreds of people expected to attend.

Karen Matheson, of Capercaillie, was due to lead the musical celebrations in the evening, ahead of the lighting of a beacon, which is one of a chain being lit around the UK.

The former Royal Yacht Britannia, which is permanently berthed at Leith, has entertainment on offer.

The yacht has been decked out in Golden Jubilee decorations and visitors were being treated to music and a "celebratory tipple".

While some Jubilee celebrations have already taken place, many more were planned for Monday and Tuesday.

Duck Derby

In Dundee, garden parties were scheduled for Camperdown Country Park, Baxter Park and Castle Green, Broughty Ferry, on Monday afternoon.

Events were also being held in many other parts of Scotland, including street parties in Aberdeen and Glasgow.

A large crowd was expected to descend on the Scottish Wool Centre, in Aberfoyle, for the annual Scottish Duck Derby, with "Queen Victoria" the guest of honour.

Anti-monarchists held their own garden party

BBC One Scotland brought live coverage from Callendar Park in Falkirk at 1630 BST as part of its Music Live programme of events.

Jubilee programmes and World Cup games were being broadcast via giant TV screen from George Square in Glasgow.

The Shetland island of Unst will spark off the worldwide chain of beacons to mark the Queen's Jubilee.

They will be lit throughout the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands and in each Commonwealth country.

However, not everyone has welcomed the Jubilee.

Scottish Socialist Party Leader Tommy Sheridan arranged an alternative garden party for Glasgow Green.

The event was due to include a host of speakers demanding that Scotland should be declared a republic.
