The Princess Royal has attended a special church service in Scotland to commemorate the Queen's Golden Jubilee.

The princess was at St Columba Church in Ayr, where worshippers took part in a service of thanksgiving to mark her mother's 50 years as monarch.

The event was the highlight of the church's year of centenary celebrations.

Members of the Royal Family have attended various church services in the UK to commemorate the Golden Jubilee.

The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh marked the occasion by attending a service at St George's Chapel in Windsor and they witnessed church leaders signing a covenant expressing their unity.

Prince Charles was at St Mary's Church in Swansea city centre with his sons William - who has been taking a break from studies at St Andrews University - and Harry.

The Princess Royal unveiled a new stained glass window dedicated toa couple who were long-standing church members following the service in Ayr.

She then visited a marquee at Belleisle where members of the congregation and 500 guests were having lunch.

Elsewhere in Scotland, some Jubilee celebrations have already taken place with many more planned for Monday and Tuesday.

Garden parties

Organisers in Edinburgh have been putting the final touches to the centrepiece Scottish event on Monday.

A Golden Jubilee party will take place in the city's Princes Street Gardens, with hundreds of people expected to attend.

Karen Matheson, of Capercaillie, will lead the musical celebrations ahead of the lighting of a beacon, one of a chain being lit around the UK.

In Dundee, garden parties have been scheduled for Camperdown Country Park, Baxter Park and Castle Green, Broughty Ferry, on Monday afternoon.

Events are also being held in Falkirk, Ullapool and Glasgow over the weekend.

BBC Music Live is staging a series of shows in Scottish towns and cities, coinciding with the Jubilee celebrations.

However, in Glasgow, the Scottish Socialist Party is organising an alternative garden party on Monday at Glasgow Green, with anti-monarchists due to speak.
