An operation has begun to recover the fishing trawler, the Greenhill, which sank near Ardglass in January with the loss of two lives.

The body of one fisherman - Donal Gibson - was found. Conor Bogues is still missing.

An operation to try to assess the boat, which is lying in 80ft of water, took place on Wednesday.

Contractors have begun the operation to bring the trawler up and it is expected to take several days.

Three men were on the boat when it hit rocks in darkness and sank. The skipper survived and was treated for hypothermia.

The wreck of the boat was located the following day.

Army divers, working under police supervision, searched near the wreckage to try to find the body of Mr Bogues, 26, a father-of-two from Ballynahinch.

'Keel of ship'

Arrangements are also in place to have the boat and the area around the seabed examined by police.

The family of Mr Bogues are being kept fully informed, said a police spokesman.

Alex Slater of the Fishermen's Mission, said the wreckage of the Greenhill was causing problems for other trawlers.

"It is only half a nautical mile off the harbour and if she breaks up, then smaller boats going into Ardglass may well hit any debris from her, especially any heavy big planks like the ribs or keel of the ship.

"If that was to rise and to hit another ship that could cause serious damage. We have lost two men already and we don't want to lose any more in Ardglass."
