The coffin of Mr Gibson is carried into the church |
Hundreds of people have attended the funeral for one of two fishermen who drowned when their vessel sank off the County Down coast. Divers who helped recover the body of Donall Gibson, 22, were among mourners at Requiem Mass in Downpatrick.
Father Sean Rogan said the family had been comforted by people who had lost loved ones in similar circumstances.
Army and civilian divers are still searching for the body of Connor Bogues, 26, near Ardglass.
Three men were on the boat, the Greenhill, when it crashed onto rocks and sank last Thursday. The skipper survived and was treated for hypothermia.
The wreck of the boat was located the following day and Mr Gibson's body was recovered on Sunday.
Father Rogan, the parish priest of Downpatrick, said the men's deaths had united the community.
"I'm sure that the three boys who went out on that fishing boat on Thursday, would never have imagined that they... would be netting and knitting the whole of the community in an enterprise of prayerfulness, love, compassion and hospitality," he said.
"They have brought together a community in unity - people from all denominations, people from all cultures, from all traditions.
"It is wonderful what can come from tragedy."

Army divers, working under police supervision, have been searching near the wreckage to try to find the body of Mr Bogues, a father-of-two from Ballynahinch.
However, bad weather has forced divers to suspend their search on several occasions. An exclusion zone around the wreck has now been lifted.
Accident investigators from Southampton are carrying out an inquiry into the tragedy.
Vigils have been held in the fishing village for the past three nights.
Meanwhile, some of the volunteers taking part in the search want funding for a dedicated team of fully trained and equipped volunteer divers based in the area.
John Lowry of Newcastle Coastguard said: "Within a couple of hours, locally, we can be on scene.
"We live here and we know the area, we know the coastline, the rivers, the lakes.
"We know what is needed, and sometimes to get that resource from 50 miles away takes a lot longer."
