It is hoped investment will be attracted to West Leeds |
A 6.2m building scheme that could bring deprived areas of Leeds up-to-date are set to be discussed by the city council. The West Leeds Gateway project would see Armley, Bramley, Pudsey, Farnley and Wortley redeveloped with improved housing and transport facilities.
It is hoped the scheme would generate more jobs for local people and attract more businesses.
The executive board is expected to approve the plans on Wednesday.
'Top priority'
Council leader Andrew Carter said: "This is a tremendously exciting scheme which will bring the West Leeds Gateway bang up-to-date and attract investment and jobs to what we expect to be a rapidly-developing area.
"We have made this area one of our top regeneration priorities because of its high levels of deprivation and potential for development.
"In my view sustained new investment in West Leeds is long over-due."
If given the go-ahead, the work would be funded by the council and Yorkshire Forward.
In New Wortley work would focus on developing a better community with the Clydes estate being earmarked for significant investment.
Armley railway station will also undergo development and more parking around Armley shopping centre is in the pipeline.
Local residents and organisations such as Leeds Prison and Leeds Healthy Living Network have been consulted about the scheme.
