Parents fined for not belting up
Hundreds of drivers in the West Midlands have been fined for not wearing a seat belt outside schools.

West Midlands Police ran a two-week campaign with spot checks during dropping off and picking up times.

The schools chosen had been picked by the roads safety officers as having problems with children not wearing seat belts in cars.

Letters had already been sent to parents at the schools to warn them of the police operation.

They reminded parents of the potentially-fatal consequences of not restraining children while driving.

Some 627 fixed penalty notices were issued through the campaign, which ended on 27 January.

Pc Steve Rogers, from the Road Policing Unit at Park Lane, said: "The police will not turn a blind eye to parents who put their children at risk.

"If you or your children are not wearing a seat belt and you are stopped by the police, you may be given a fixed penalty notice."
