The Seatbelts Save Lives - Do It Up! campaign aims to save lives |
Police and councils in Notts have launched a belting up campaign to cut road casualties across the county. Seatbelts Save Lives - Do It Up! aims to encourage people to wear their belts with adverts on buses, car park tickets and radio adverts.
It has been illegal for people in front seats not to wear a belt since 1983, and for rear seat passengers from 1991.
Ch Insp Dianne Wilson said: "That's 22 years since the law first changed, and still people don't wear seatbelts."
The head of the roads policing department added: "Such a basic thing could save so many lives and it amazes me that people haven't learnt that lesson yet.
"Nottinghamshire Police officers will be rigorously enforcing seatbelt law to address this totally preventable loss of life and serious injury.

"The message to all drivers and passengers is clear; Seatbelts Save Lives - Do It Up!"
Jill Fisher, from Nottinghamshire County Council's Accident Investigation Unit, said 183 people have been killed or seriously injured in collisions on county roads while not wearing a seatbelt since 2002.
She added: "This is a tragic waste of life and, while it cannot be eliminated completely, it could be reduced dramatically if everyone wore a seatbelt every time they made a journey on our roads.
"It's a proven fact that your chance of survival is 4 times greater if you have a seatbelt on in a crash."
