Booze ban in force city west end
Drinkers are now barred from consuming alcohol in all streets in an area of Newcastle.

An Alcohol Exclusion Zone now covers the entire west end of the city in an effort to reduce anti-social behaviour.

The area covers the Town Moor, including Exhibition Park, and means officers can seize cans and bottles from people caught breaking the law.

The zone ban also means that anyone carrying alcohol risks arrest because this is also an offence.

Using their discretion, officers can seize drink and either pour it away or confiscate it and dispose of it later.

Buying drink

Benwell and Elswick neighbourhood inspector, Jerry Barker, said: "The west end suffers from a disproportionate amount of alcohol-related disorder and this order will help us tackle the problem and improve the quality of life of residents.

"If adults have legitimately bought alcohol and are taking it home then obviously that's no problem.

"But we will not tolerate people walking around swigging alcohol from cans or bottles, or adults who are buying drink for youngsters."

The area covered, running north from the river, is to the east of Amelia Walk, West View, Bentinck Road, Gainsborough Grove, Brighton Grove and Hunters Road to the Central Motorway.
