The crackdown on public drinking comes after complaints |
Drinking has been banned in most public places in a Kent town in a bid to cut down on drunkenness. Almost the whole of Gravesend town centre is now part of an alcohol exclusion zone.
Gravesham Borough Council said anyone caught drinking could now be stopped and have their drinks taken from them.
Police are to carry out extra patrols in the Sensory Garden area between Windmill Street and Stone street after complaints from local shopkeepers.
'Crime and nuisance'
Tree branches will also be cut back by the council's horticulture team to discourage drinkers from congregating.
Council leader councillor Mike Snelling said: "We have promised to make crime and nuisance our top priority and we are starting by cracking down on the disorderly behaviour of the minority.
"I know the majority of people and families in the borough are offended by these scenes. We will be closely monitoring the situation and applaud enforcement action taken by the police."
Councillor Bryan Sweetland added: "We are determined to put a stop to the drunkenness which has routinely disfigured what is supposed to be an oasis of tranquillity in the town centre."
