The alcohol was confiscated in a crackdown on street drinking |
Large amounts of drink have been seized by police enforcing an alcohol exclusion zone on Tyneside. Officers have confiscated about 400 bottles and cans in the Westerhope and Newburn areas of Newcastle, mainly from young people.
The haul comprises around 100 litres of lager, 20 litres of cider and a further 20 litres of alcopops.
Youngsters caught with drink have it taken away and their parents are informed about the action.
Neighbourhood inspector Jan Harrison said: "These zones prevent on-street drinking and are all about improving people's quality of lives.
"There is no doubt that drunkenness can lead to other crime, particularly anti-social behaviour, and we are not prepared to tolerate it.
"Criminal damage and crimes of violence against the person have fallen in the area and the stand against drinking on the street has certainly contributed to this."
