Fake CDs seized at car boot sale
More than 30,000 fake computer games, DVDs and CDs worth more than 500,000 have been seized at a car boot sale.

Customs and Excise, Staffordshire Trading Standards and police stormed a car boot sale on Sunday in Dark Lane, just outside Wolverhampton.

The raid resulted in one of the largest number of counterfeit goods ever recovered in Staffordshire.

Many of the titles included unreleased films and new releases like The Passion of Christ and Scooby Doo 2.

Brian Mycock, from trading standards, said plain clothes inspectors went into the car boot sale posing as members of the public and spotted fake goods on several stalls.

Previous raids

With back-up from the police they raided the stalls with two offenders managing to get away on foot.

He said: "Two people did run off but they have lost all of their goods and that is punishment enough for them.

"Some of the CDs and DVDs were better than others, some were in proper boxes covered in shrink wrap to make them look more authentic but others were just in plastic bags.

"This is one of the largest ever seizures that we have had of this kind."

The swoop is the latest in a string of problems at the Dark Lane car boot sale that has been targeted by trading standards officials previously.

Last month 1,000 DVDs were confiscated from the same sale.

A spokesperson for The Federation Against Copyright Theft, who represent the rights of the film industry, said: "We would like to commend Trading Standards and the Fraud and Special Investigations unit in dealing with this problem market."
