Newhaven was recommended as an incinerator site in the plan |
Opponents of plans for a waste treatment plant at Hollingdean and an incinerator at Newhaven are to protest outside the Town Hall in Brighton. "Dump the Dump" demonstrators will be carrying flowers to show they want to "keep Hollingdean sweet and green" during Thursday's protest.
Campaigners from Defenders of the Ouse Valley and Estuary (Dove) are demonstrating over the Newhaven plans.
Brighton and Hove City Council will discuss the plan at its annual meeting.
Lively but peaceful
Several hundred people took part in a six-week public consultation on the controversial proposals.
The protesters say Thursday's demonstration will be lively but peaceful.
A planning application for the former abattoir site off Hollingdean Lane proposes three buildings.
One would be for sorting recyclable materials from kerbside collections and household waste recycling sites.
Another would provide temporary storage for municipal waste before it is taken to a landfill or incinerator site.
There would also be a visitor centre and office building.
The city council says the idea is to manage waste within the area where it is produced and to minimise the volume sent to landfill.
The majority of household waste from Brighton and Hove currently goes to landfill sites at Pebsham and Beddingham, which will be full by 2008.
