Controversial waste plans debated
North Quay, Newhaven
The Newhaven incinerator plan was backed by a government inspector
Plans for the long-term management of waste generated in Brighton and Hove come under discussion on Thursday.

An incinerator which would deal with waste from across East Sussex has been proposed for Newhaven, 15 miles away.

Local residents have fought a long battle against the scheme and it has also been criticised by environmental groups including Friends of the Earth.

Although the proposed plant is outside Brighton and Hove it affects the city as its waste would be dealt with there.

Recycling targets

Many Newhaven residents are against the scheme as they feel it would affect the environment and their health.

No planning application has been put forward for the plant, but a public inquiry last year into East Sussex County Council's waste plan ended with Newhaven being recommended as a suitable site.

Another proposed site, Mountfield, near Battle, was ruled out at the same time.

Friends of the Earth has criticised the county council's plans, claiming the recycling targets are too low.
