School party demo against depot
North Quay, Newhaven
Newhaven was recommended as an incinerator site in the plan
Waste campaigners are holding a party for children, parents and residents at a school near the site of a planned waste depot in Brighton.

Protesters say the depot will be built "feet away" from Downs Infants School.

The planned waste depot at Hollingdean has been put forward as part of East Sussex County Council's waste plan.

Consultation on the plans ended on 24 March. The county council said feedback is now being analysed. Brighton council will discuss the plans in May.

Silent demo

Several hundred people took part in the six-week consultation.

Earlier this month, a silent protest was held outside a meeting of East Sussex County Council on Tuesday.

Campaigners from Defenders of the Ouse Valley and Estuary (Dove) have said the waste plan will lead to mass incineration and cross border transport of waste.

The campaigners also said they were being ignored, but a statement from East Sussex County Council said: "The county council and Brighton and Hove City Council are not ignoring comments from Dove or any other group or individual.

"Council officers are currently recording and analysing public responses to the latest consultation and it is anticipated a report can be made to the two councils in late summer 2005."
