Eighty competitors are taking part in the three-day event in India

Paul Holzherr, 41, from Lewes, suffered an injury to his spine after crash-landing near Billing, in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh, on Sunday.

Organisers of the event said a plane arranged by an insurance company had airlifted him to Delhi on Monday, from where he would be flown back to the UK.

His son told the BBC the incident had been caused by a "bad patch of air".

Another competitor, from France, suffered a broken leg.

The paragliders had been taking part in a three-day pre-world cup meeting, jointly organised by the Himachal Pradesh tourism department and the Paragliding World Cup Association in France (PWCA).

The event, in which there are 80 participants, ends on Tuesday.
