Alternative routes will be signposted to avoid excessive delays |
Commuters and motorists are facing three months of disruption and delays on the M1 in South Yorkshire as a 3.5m programme of roadworks gets under way. A 2.5mile (4.1km) stretch of the motorway between junctions 32 and 33, near Rotherham, will be affected.
The Highways Agency says the work is needed to repair worn out sections of the carriageway and make it safer and more environmentally friendly.
A 50mph speed limit will be enforced until the work ends in September.
Improvements will include resurfacing the carriageway with low noise material, upgrading the steel safety fencing, waterproofing Long Lane bridge and Bank underpass and repairing drainage systems.
On weekdays, there will be three narrow lanes along parts of the route in each direction but that will be reduced to just two lanes at weekends.
There will also be lane closures overnight, every night, to allow major work to be carried out at quieter times to help minimise delays.
Highways Agency manager Roger Wantling said: "The work may cause significant delays, especially during peak times and at weekends, for which we apologise."
