Rethink urged on M1 widening plan
The Highways Agency has been urged to rethink plans to widen the M1 in Leicestershire by councillors.

Members of the county council's cabinet said they are concerned about the impact the scheme will have on homeowners and the environment.

Proposals include adding extra lanes, the introduction of a new flyover to the M69 and a bypass for Kegworth.

The Highways Agency has agreed to consult with residents before finalising the plans.

Imaginative solutions

David Parsons, leader of the county council, said: "Many will welcome the reduced congestion that motorway widening will bring and I am particularly pleased that Kegworth should at last get its much-needed bypass.

"But we have two very significant problems which need resolving. The first is the massive impact that the flyover link from the M69 would have on local people.

"The second is the very substantial noise nuisance and other environmental impacts caused by the motorway.

"We will be asking the Highways Agency for really effective noise mitigation measures, not just fences but also more imaginative approaches such as embankments and tree planting."
