The council says each school should ideally have four or seven classes
An official consultation period has begun to determine the future of some of Shropshire's schools.

Up to 20 could be closed or merged in an education shake-up.

Proposals are being put forward because of falling pupil numbers and parents are being urged to use an online feedback form to express their views.

The county council's education spokeswoman Liz Nicholson said she wants to make sure the plans "are the right ones for Shropshire".

The proposals being put forward are:

  • To ensure every child is entitled to a school place within 6 miles (9.66km) or less - 2 miles (3.22km) or less in towns.
  • To plan towards an ideal of either four or seven classes in each school.
  • To aim towards merging infant and junior schools in large towns, except where it would result in more than 420 pupils.
  • The council said that if nothing is done, there would be about 5,500 surplus school places come 2012.
