Town's parking provisions debated
A council is considering introducing a free park-and-ride service in a town after several disputes with traders.

Parking charges in Ludlow, Shropshire, were suspended over Christmas after complaints they were affecting trade and keeping visitors away.

Problems with the solar-powered meters taking inaccurate readings added to the decision by Shropshire County Council.

Painted yellow lines could also be removed in the town's "Red" parking zone, the council said.

The council is seeking approval from the Department of Transport to remove the lines as well as some signs.

'Big step forward'

The council has been discussing the new parking proposals with traders and residents.

The maximum time allowed for street parking would increase to four hours as part of the plans.

Ludlow Town Council will discuss the plans on 8 February before being submitted for final approval by the county council.

A county council spokesman said: "This is a big step forward in finding an acceptable solution for residents and traders in the town.

"If these proposals are agreed, people must be aware that they will take time to be implemented in full, however we are committed to finding the quickest and easiest way to do this."
