Work begins on football stadium
Gay Meadow during flooding
The Gay Meadow pitch has flooded regularly
Work to build Shrewsbury Town FC's new 10,000-seater stadium New Meadow is to begin on Monday.

The new ground has been planned for years and will allow the club to move from its ground at Gay Meadow near the River Severn which regularly floods.

It is expected the new ground in Oteley Road will be ready in just over a year and the League Two club will move there in time for the 2007/8 season.

Shrewsbury vice-chairman Keith Sayfritz said it was "fantastic" news.

Once the Gay Meadow ground is vacated, about 150 new homes are due to be built on the site.

Mr Sayfritz told the football club's website: "It's a fantastic day and is another massive phase in our quest for a new stadium.

"All our fans know that it's vital that the club have a new stadium and the journey it's been to come to this point."
