Rural roads in Oxfordshire targeted by gritters

Council gritters are being used on rural routes across Oxfordshire as the county begins to thaw.

Only seven schools have remained closed after about 100 were forced to shut on Wednesday following heavy snowfall.

But the county council warned parents to check with their individual school as many were planning to open later than usual.

Rubbish collections are also continuing to be disrupted due to the weather conditions.

Gritters have been targeting many rural roads across the county which have become dangerous.

Clear pavements

Grit workers slept in council offices overnight on Tuesday to make sure they could maintain their operations and farmers also helped clear roads.

The county council has been using snow ploughs to clear roads and approaches to schools.

Council staff who have not been able to get to work have also been lending a hand.

They have been advised to help their communities by clearing snow from pavements.

Huw Jones, director for environment and economy at the county council, said: "We're delighted with the way town and district councils and volunteers such as farmers have worked with us."

Parents have been advised to listen to local radio and to check council websites for the latest schools information.
