Bar staff in Nottingham are being warned they face 80 fines if they serve alcohol to under-18s as part of a drive to cut alcohol-related crime. The police and the city council have teamed up with other agencies to launch the two-month Safe Nottingham scheme.
It will see additional police patrols launched on Friday and Saturday nights.
The clampdown on violent crime coincides with the introduction of tougher controls on drinking in public places in Nottingham city centre.
'Feel safe'
Under the terms of a new Alcohol Designation Order, due to come into effect on 1 September, anyone who continues to drink in the street when asked to stop by a police officer faces arrest.
The order will replace existing street drinking byelaws in Nottingham city centre but will cover a wider area.
Supt David Colbeck said: "Alcohol-related crime and domestic violence are responsible for much of our violent crime and this is a concerted effort by ourselves and our partners to reduce the number of incidents.
"We want people to feel safe in Nottingham when they go out socialising in the city centre, not frightened or put off by drunken, anti-social behaviour.
"There will be more police officers on patrol at night in the city centre. Those who are drunk and disorderly face fines or arrest and we will be targeting irresponsible licensees who sell alcohol to drunks or under-18s."
