A North Yorkshire climber is just one mountain away from becoming the first Briton to have stood on top of the world's 14 highest peaks. Alan Hinkes, from Northallerton, is preparing to summit Kangchenjunga in the Himalayas. He has already set up two camps on the mountain.
Conditions on the mountain are said to be treacherous with a Swiss expedition already needing to be rescued.
Bad weather forced him to abandon an attempt to climb Kangchenjunga in 2000.
'Life threatening'
Speaking from camp two, Mr Hinkes said: "I am hoping there won't be a need for a third camp but with conditions already threatening the lives of those around me I need to make a sound judgement call when the time comes.
"As I have always stated no mountain is worth a life but with this being my final 8000m trek and having been to Kangchenjunga and failed already I have sights set firm."
Mr Hinkes is again climbing with his friend Pasang who joined him on the summit of Dhaulagiri last year.
