Alan Hinkes began his challenge to climb all 14 peaks in 1987

Mr Hinkes, from Northallerton, completed the trek to Kangchenjunga the day before his 51st birthday.

He is attempting to become the first Briton to have stood on top of the 14 mountains over 8,000m. Kangchenjunga is the only one he has still to climb.

His attempt on the summit in the Himalayas will start as soon as he has become acclimatised.

Speaking from his base camp, Mr Hinkes said: "I'm feeling as well as can be expected in these early stages of acclimatisation and hopefully I'll start getting out and about in the next few days."

An attempt by him to climb Kangchenjunga in 2000 had to be abandoned because of bad weather.
